Kale
Kale is typically sown in Spring (typically late November and early December) as a single graze winter crop. It can also be used for summer feed as an alternative to rape or summer turnips. Be sure not to plant kale too early as frosts post sowing can make them flower and go to seed in summer.
Taller, high yielding cultivars are best suited to cattle grazing, whereas shorter, leafier kales are more best suited to sheep and deer.
Bombardier - Intermediate Kale with excellent stem quality. Due to the soft stems, it is more susceptible to lodging than traditional kales. Recommended sowing late November onwards. Sowing rate 5kg/ha.
Coleor - Leafy, with a short to medium stem height and good winter hardiness. Coleor has distinctive purple leaves. Sowing rate 4-5kg/ha.
Corsa - Giant type with a high leaf-to-stem ratio.
Gruner - A high yielding giant type with good frost and aphid tolerance. Stems may be thick and fibrous.
Kea - Intermediate type with rapid growth and high leaf content. Can be used as a high-yielding single-graze Winter feed or as a multigrazed option. When planted in early Spring, Kea can be grazed multiple times throughout the Summer and Autumn months. Sowing rate 4kg/ha.
Kestrel - Short height with excellent leaf-to-stem ratio and good late winter leafiness. First and second crop option with good regrowth if lightly grazed during late summer. Sowing rate 4kg/ha.
Proteor - Intermediate stem height with high leaf to stem ratio and good winter hardiness. Sowing rate 4-5kg/ha.
Regal - Intermediate height and high leaf-to-stem ratio, with very good late-winter leaf percentage. Sowing rate 4kg/ha.
SovGold - Late flowering kale with very high leaf yield. Sowing rate 4kg/ha.
rape
Rape is a fast maturing crop with a high nutritive value. Typically, rape can be first grazed after about 70-110 days when sown from September - November. As a winter crop, rape is generally ready to be grazed 80-120 days after sowing between November - February.
Ember
Goliath - A high yielding, giant type rape x kale hybrid. Superior regrowth for multi-graze potential.
Greenland - An early maturing, leafy type with a medium height. Very late flowering and suitable for a range of environments. Good aphid tolerance.
Interval - A tall, fast establishing rape with high DM yields. Good tolerance to dry conditions and frost, and is ideal for summer, autumn and winter feeds.
Mainstar - An early maturing rape with excellent regrowth potential and good frost tolerance. Very good aphid tolerance.
Pillar - A multi-graze giant-type with good regrowth potential. Pillar is fast establishing, and has good aphid tolerance and disease resistance. Suitable for sheep, cattle and deer and can be sown in spring or autumn.
Spitfire - A multi-purpose intermediate height rape that’s late maturing. Spitfire is suitable for summer, autumn and early winter feeding. Excellent aphid tolerance.
Titan - A high-yielding rape x kale hybrid. Titan is a multi-graze, intermediate height rape with excellent re-growth potential. It’s suitable for summer, autumn and winter feed and has very good aphid and virus tolerance.
Vixen
Winfred - A versatile rape suitable for a wide range of soil fertility and environmental conditions. Can be either spring and/or late-summer sown.
Leafy Turnips
Forage brassicas are a cross between turnips and other brassicas resulting in a fast establishing leafy turnip with minimal bulb development.
Hunter - Hunter recovers from grazing quickly, has excellent subsequent yields and good plant survival through multiple grazings. Strong tolerance to turnip mosaic virus and cauliflower mosaic virus. Sowing rate 4 kg/ha.
Pasja II - A fast-establishing, flexible grazing option for all stock classes over summer and autumn. Pasja II has very good plant persistence after multiple grazings. Sowing rate 4 kg/ha.
Pacer - A versatile and fast establishing leafy turnip with non-bolting characteristics. Pacer is quick to recover offering multiple grazings of quality summer feed. Best suited to medium-high fertility soils with summer moisture Suitable for all stock types. Sowing rate: 3-5kg/ha.
Summer Turnip Cultivars:
Barkant - A very high yielding turnip with a tankard bulb shape to reduce the risk of choke. Barkant has high levels of protein due to the high leaf-to-bulb ratio. Sowing Rate 3 kg/ha.
Dynamo - A high yielding and early maturing cultivar that’s perfect for dairy cows. Dynamo offers quality summer feed and has a good level of bulb (around 48% of total yield). Sowing rate 2-3kg/ha.
Marco - Sowing rate 3kg/ha.
Rival - An early-maturing tankard-shaped bulb turnip.
Winter Turnip Cultivars:
Appin - A flexible, multi-graze leafy turnip that’s a good option for quick winter feed. Appins tops and bulbs are palatable for sheep and cattle, and can be re-grazed in 30 days if the initial grazing is well managed. Sowing Rate: 1kg/HA.
Green Globe - A late maturing (90-120 days to grazing), multi purpose turnip that can be sown for grazing in summer, autumn and winter. Sowing rate 2 kg/ha.
New York - A medium maturing, oval bulbed diploid turnip with white flesh and purple skin. Time to first grazing is 16 weeks when sown from late October to early November or 18-20 weeks when sown from January to February.
G2 - A later maturing (110+ days) round globe diploid turnip with green skin and white flesh. Sowing rate 800g-1.5kg/ha.
